Democracy in Action at Leek First School
At The Talentum Learning Trust, we are proud to nurture young learners who are not only academically capable but also engaged and informed members of their community. As part of our commitment to fostering aspiration, compassion, and integrity, Leek First School recently provided our pupils with a wonderful opportunity to experience democracy in action firsthand.
A Memorable Visit to the Council Offices
Our pupils from Leek First School recently visited the local council offices to take part in Armed Forces Day celebrations. This visit was a fantastic way for them to learn about how local government operates and the important role it plays in our community.
During the visit, pupils were treated to:
- A guided tour of the council offices, learning about the history and daily workings of local government.
- Refreshments kindly provided by the council staff.
- The unique experience of sitting in the council chamber, where they got to sit on the official chairs and use the microphones—an exciting and memorable moment for them!
- An interactive session where they asked questions about the council’s work and even participated in a vote on a local issue.
Learning Through Participation
This hands-on experience perfectly reflects our Trust’s vision of “Building together, Excellence in standards, Strength through collaboration, A place where everyone flourishes.” By engaging with local democracy, our pupils developed a deeper understanding of citizenship, responsibility, and community involvement.
It was particularly amusing when the pupils voted on a lighthearted proposal about ice cream on Fridays. If your child comes home convinced that ice cream after school on Fridays is now a legal right, please kindly direct your queries to the leader of the council—it’s certainly not a school rule! 😄 This moment of humour highlights how democracy can be both educational and fun.
We extend our sincere thanks to everyone at the council offices for welcoming our pupils so warmly and providing such an enriching educational experience. Events like this strengthen the partnership between our schools and the wider community, reinforcing our commitment to preparing pupils not just academically but as active, informed citizens.
At Leek First School, democracy isn’t just a subject in the classroom—it’s a lived experience. By taking part in local government activities, our pupils are growing into confident, compassionate, and responsible individuals.
